Seagate has recently achieved a significant milestone in the field of data storage with the introduction of the Exos X Mozaic 3+, a powerful 30TB mechanical hard drive. This groundbreaking product now stands as the largest capacity hard drive available, specifically designed for enterprise and data center users.
The impressive storage capacity of this hard drive is made possible through advanced technology. It comprises ten 3TB platters, achieving an extraordinary density of 1.742 TB per square inch. Seagate has incorporated state-of-the-art magnetic field reading sensors, which are the smallest and most sensitive of their kind, enabling the retrieval of data from the hard drive's platters. Additionally, the drive features a 12-nanometer integrated controller, boosting efficiency threefold compared to older models.
In a recent interview with Tech Radar, Seagate's Executive Vice President, BS Teh, shared insights into the company's strategy. Despite the remarkable achievement, Teh mentioned that Seagate does not intend to increase the number of platters in the future. This decision is rooted in the desire to avoid potential issues related to noise, cost, reliability, weight, power consumption, and heat dissipation.
Seagate is witnessing substantial demand for its Mozaic 3+ hard drives from data center clients. It is anticipated that these drives will be fully embraced and deployed in large quantities by the end of the current quarter.
Seagate's CEO, Dave Mosley, emphasized the company's unique position as the sole hard drive manufacturer capable of reaching 3 TB per platter. Mosley also revealed future plans to introduce platters with a whopping 5 TB capacity. This technological advancement is particularly vital as the use of artificial intelligence (AI) expands, driving the demand for extensive raw data storage.
Mosley underscored the significance of areal density in meeting the surging demand for data storage, highlighting that Seagate's innovations align seamlessly with both current and future data storage needs.
The eagerly anticipated Exos 30TB hard drive from Seagate is slated for release in the first quarter of 2024. Initially targeting hyperscale cloud customers, it is expected to become available to the general public at an estimated price of around $450. This marks a promising step forward in the evolution of data storage solutions.
